The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has named 43 businesses in its latest list of income tax defaulters, a disclosure that places several of the country’s best-known resort operators, retail chains, and construction firms in the public spotlight.
The “Name and Shame” list, published as of December 31, 2024, identifies entities that have either failed to pay outstanding income tax or have not submitted the required tax returns.
Tourism sector:
- Canareef Resort
- Kihaa Maldives
- South Palm Resor
- Eriyadhoo Island Resort
- Plumeria Hotels
Construction sector:
- Renatus
- Mala High Rising
Other sectors:
- Focus Infocom
- AH Brothers
- New Edition
- MyChemist
- Poise Distributors
- Sibco Retail
- Water Solutions
Their inclusion draws particular attention given the sector’s central role in the economy and its historically high revenue visibility.
MIRA publishes the “Name and Shame” list as part of its enforcement toolkit to recover unpaid taxes and nudge businesses toward voluntary compliance.
The list is compiled in accordance with the Tax Administration Act, which empowers MIRA to publicly disclose details of taxpayers who fail to meet their obligations despite repeated reminders. While being named does not automatically trigger further legal action, it often serves as a final reputational warning before more severe measures such as freezing accounts or pursuing court orders.
